Course description:
BU 220 introduces students to the principles of management, management planning and the control function of management.
The differences between strategic, tactical and operational planning are covered so that the student understands the different management activities involved at different levels of the organization.
In addition, the course explores the management of production and operating systems in different types of organizations. Focus will be placed on the use of project management.
The role of labour unions in Canadian business will also be addressed in the context of effective management. |
Methodology:
The course is delivered in a structured classroom setting consisting of lectures, case studies, videos and in-class activities.
The activities include group discussions, and assigned presentations. There is a high expectation of additional homework for preparation and assignment completion.
The ability to work in teams and communicate effectively is important in business. You will undertake assignments in teams and make a presentation on a related topic to your class colleagues. |

Attendance 15%, Case studies(2) 30%, Presentation topics (1) 15%, Final Exam 40%
A requirement of 60% in all areas is to be achieved for Certificate/Diploma |

If this is a core course in your diploma, 70% in overall evaluation is a passing grade. If this is a core course in your certificate, 60% in overall evaluation is a passing grade. If this is an elective course in your program of study, 50% in overall evaluation is a passing grade. |
