BU 220 Operations and Production Management

Course description:

BU 220 introduces students to the principles of management, management planning and the control function of management.

The differences between strategic, tactical and operational planning are covered so that the student understands the different management activities involved at different levels of the organization.

In addition, the course explores the management of production and operating systems in different types of organizations. Focus will be placed on the use of project management.

The role of labour unions in Canadian business will also be addressed in the context of effective management.

Methodology:

The course is delivered in a structured classroom setting consisting of lectures, case studies, videos and in-class activities.

The activities include group discussions, and assigned presentations. There is a high expectation of additional homework for preparation and assignment completion.

The ability to work in teams and communicate effectively is important in business. You will undertake assignments in teams and make a presentation on a related topic to your class colleagues.

Learning outcomes:

On successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • Explain the control mechanisms available to managers.
  • Identify the major types and applications of production processes.

  • Describe the importance of labour unions in business.
  • Explain the roles labour unions play in the modern business environment.
  • Describe the power that labour unions and management have in the collective bargaining process.
  • Explain the tools available to labour unions and management to resolve conflict.

Expectations:

·         Students are requested to attend class on time and actively participate in class discussions.

·         Assignments are due at the beginning of class on the due date.

·         Presentations will be professional and business-like.

·         Cellular phones and pagers must be turned off.

·         Students are expected to read the material in advance of coming to class to facilitate learning.

A requirement of 60% in all areas is to be achieved for Certificate/Diploma

Prerequisite courses or equivalent knowledge:

Completion of the Foundations program or demonstration of equivalent skills.

Passing grade:

If this is a core course in your diploma, 70% in overall evaluation is a passing grade. If this is a core course in your certificate, 60% in overall evaluation is a passing grade. If this is an elective course in your program of study, 50% in overall evaluation is a passing grade.
